Most leaks are found in the body of the pool, in that case we find the leak and patch it with epoxy putty, hydraulic cement, or bytle tape. This would be included in the price of the leak detection. How to perform a BUCKET TEST to determine your pool is leaking:
- Have your pool filled to its standard level. This is usually halfway up the tile or halfway up the mouth of the skimmer.
- Using a 5-gallon bucket, fill it up ¾ of the way up the bucket and place it on the first step or second step inside the pool.
- With a pencil or such mark, the water level inside the bucket where the water level is. (This will represent the evaporation rate.)
- With a pencil or such mark, the water level on the outside of the bucket where the water level is. (This will represent the pool leak rate.)
- Come back in 24 hours to compare the inside water level to the outside water level marks. If the water level outside the bucket has dropped more than the water level inside the bucket, you likely have a pool leak and need to call a professional.
- You can re-do the test with the pool pump on then do the test again with the pool pump off.
- Make sure to turn any autofill valve off and close access to the pool.
- Make a note to check the bucket at exactly the 24-hour mark, as waiting longer than this can give inaccurate results. If it rains you will have to wait and start over when there is a clear forecast. Please understand in South Florida dry season a normal pool can lose up to 1 inch per week to normal evaporation, it can also increase if water features are constantly on, if you are heating the pool, and or if you have wind.
